*Michael Jordan became visibly emotional Thursday in Charlotte as he spoke about his $7.2 million donation for two Novant Health clinics.
“I’ve gone off and made my life in Illinois and other places,” Jordan said, referring to his NBA career with the Chicago Bulls. “But I know where it all begins.”
He added, “And I don’t need my mother to constantly remind me about that,” Jordan said as the crowd laughed, per Charlotte Observer.
“I can only give in gratitude for what I can never repay.”
Jordan unveiled the first of two medical clinics he and his family funded in Charlotte, both will provide care to underprivileged members of the community, per NBC.com.

The six-time NBA champion and Hornets owner was on hand Thursday for the grand opening of the $7 million Novant Health Michael Jordan Family Medical Clinic on Freedom Drive. As tears streamed down his cheeks, Jordan said, “this is a very emotional thing for me to be able to give back to a community that has supported me over the years.”
The Freedom Drive clinic, and a second facility expected to open on Statesville Avenue, will “provide both primary health care services as well as access to social workers, behavioral health experts, oral health practitioners, and physical therapy,” the report states.
MJ said he sees his giving as a way to support a community “that’s supported me over the years, when I was playing the game of basketball to now where I’m a part of this community.”
Jordan, who has an estimated net worth of about $1.9 billion, also noted that his generosity is not about the money, “It’s from the heart — a passion from what this city, this state has given back to me,” he said Thursday. “I can never repay what you have given to me. But this is a start.”
