Senator Kamala Harris: When you attend an HBCU, it really is about being in an environment where everything tells you, you can be whatever you choose to be… and that it will be supported.  Um, and you know there’s so much about, about it now for me is running for president that I realize really did set the mold for me.  Because, you know, now in the campaign people are saying, “Oh, you know, electability.” It’s coming up, right?  “Is America ready to elect a black woman to be the president of the United States?”

(The Real audience applauds)

Senator Harris: Right. Right, Right. But, you know, this is not a new conversation for me.  Every time I’ve run for office that conversation has come up. “Well, I don’t know. Nobody like you has ever done it before. Maybe it’s not your time.  Maybe it’s not your turn. I really think you can do it, but I don’t know about my neighbors.”, right? And when you go to an HBCU, you, it’s just engrained in you what I know to be true… which is that we should never be burdened by what has been to know what can be. Right? It’s about being able to see what can be even if it’s not been seen before.

Jeannie Mai: So true.

Senator Harris: It’s about an environment that encourages that kind of path knowing that it is possible and that people believe in it and then you can achieve it.
