Iconic Soul Train Dancer Damita Jo Freeman Hosts Historic Dance Panel on October 6 in LA

*Los Angeles, CA  — The Dancer Jo Foundation, headed by renowned dancer/choreographer, Damita Jo Freeman (in collaboration with GoodJenks Media Group, Inc. led by writer/editor/documentarian, Flo Jenkins) unites memorable dancers of two of the world’s most iconic television dance shows, Soul Train and American Bandstand, in a panel discussion: “Real Talk, Real History, Real Soul” by sharing never-before-heard stories detailing their historic cultural and artistic/entertainment impact, Sunday, October 6, 2019, 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Lula Washington Dance Theatre, 3773 Crenshaw Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90016.

Dancer/Choreographer/Stage Director/Actress, Damita Jo Freeman who heads this event that will benefit aspiring young artists, has worn a lot of successful, creative hats throughout her career. But she remembers the childhood days when she only had dreamsbig dreams of using her gift in the world of show business. Doors were miraculously opened for her when she became a star dancer on the highly-popular Soul Train television show in the 1970s.

A standout talent-wise and personality- wise, Damita Jo could  not be overlooked as she drew millions of people to their television sets weekly to watch her unique dance moves, a mix of her ballet-training and soulful street dance styles! Her talents were also displayed on the long running American Bandstand dance show where her gifted-dancing won her dance contests as well as the hearts of viewers and the show’s man-in-charge, Mr. Dick Clark. Damita Jo eventually worked as choreographer for many of Mr. Clark’s projects.

Damita Jo eventually traveled the world working as dancer/choreographer/stage director for some of the biggest stars in show business including Cher, Lionel Richie, Diana Ross, Whitney Houston, Shirley MacLaine, and provided her creative expertise to shows like the American Music Awards, Grammy Awards, Daytime Emmys, and many more. As an actress, she displayed her comedic skill alongside Academy Award-Winning actress, Goldie Hawn, in the famed Private Benjamin movie and television series. Among Damita Jo’s many career highlights was working with Lionel Richie, as choreographer of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Closing Ceremonies, held at the Los Angeles Coliseum.

Today, as CEO/President of her non-profit organization, Dancer Jo Foundation, Damita Jo is committed to helping kids’ dreams become reality. She is looking for others who are committed to the same vision and want to partner with her, especially in upcoming events that will benefit her Foundation. “We definitely need sponsorships and funding support from those who can help change a talented kid’s life,” she says.

The popular dancers of both Soul Train and American Bandstand have influenced multi-generations throughout more than four decades; yet, despite their huge impact on all things dance as well as fashion, they have remained voiceless. Few know the inside viewpoints of the talented dancers they have long imitated and admired, dancers who experienced living through many life-changing, revolutionary American events. This historic panel will share what it was like both in front of the television cameras and off camera, living in a culturally changing America that went through many high points, including wars, racial divide, and societal gains.

Two world-renowned entertainment favorites from the music/television/movie world will join the event as “mystery guests”. The audience will be invited to join a finale, the famous Soul Train Dance Line. Performances will be provided by talented local singer/songwriter LoveLogiq, and hot new comedienne, D’Marie.
