THE REAL Welcomes Guest Co-Host Amanda Seales and Recap Emmy Awards – WATCH

*On Monday, Sept. 23, “The Real” welcomes guest co-host recording artist, actress, comedian and author Amanda Seales. Also, the hosts recap last night’s Emmy Awards – the winners, the losers and the fashions!

The ladies also discuss the controversy surrounding an H&M ad in which a young black girl’s natural hair appeared not to have been styled. Amanda and co-host Tamera Mowry-Housley discuss working on television and film sets without people familiar with styling black hair.

Would you snitch to save yourself? Co-host Loni Love says she would – and she is proving it by naming names – lots of names!

And it’s Man Crush Monday! See who the ladies have chosen to be their Man Crushes on first day of Fall!

Amanda Seales: A lot of times, and we’re women of color, you go on a set, and your version of “natural” is not communicated to the other person in a way that they understand. So when I go on a set and I say I have a natural look, I’ve had people think that means, “Oh, so we’re not going to put makeup on you.” And it just means no, I just don’t want, I just don’t want a whole, I don’t want to be, yeah…

Adrienne Houghton: You don’t want this, what I’ve done to my face today –

[The Real audience applauds]

Adrienne: Contour, lashes…

Amanda: I don’t want a whole contour situation! Contour!

Adrienne: That’s what I said!

Amanda: But I think that there’s… But there is… I still would like my hair to be addressed.

Tamera Mowry-Housley: Yes!

Amanda: So like any black mother is sending their child to school with their hair brushed, even if doesn’t have a chemical in it. Because that’s the part that makes it natural.

Adrienne: Correct.

Amanda: That there’s no chemical in it. But it’s still brushed.

[The Real audience applauds]

Amanda: And so I think Vernon and what we’re all talking about it simply just that fact that in a lot of these spaces there is nobody who understands the unique culture of black hair, and so a lot of times it can get misrepresented. And that’s all we want, more quality, less pain.

Tamera: I agree 100%.

[The Real audience applauds]

Tamera: I’ve actually experienced – and I know you’ve probably experienced this – I think production needs to take responsibility…

Amanda: Yes!

Tamera: That if you are going to have women of color, if you’re going to have someone who has hair like this [INDICATES HER OWN HAIR], they have somebody there who understands it.

[The Real audience applauds]

Amanda: It’s different.

Adrienne: Diversity needs to happen in front of the camera and behind the camera.

Tamera: And sometimes we’re forced to deal with what they have. Many times I’ve sat in the chair and I’ve had to like “teach,” like, “Oh no, no, no, no, what are you doing, ahhhh, no, no, no, no, no. No.”

Amanda: I was told to bring my own hair products.

Tamera: I had to do my own hair!
