*NBCs “Bluff City Law” premieres next Monday!

Actors Jimmy Smits and Michael Luwoye talked to EUR correspondent Fahnia Thomas about their co-stars, kids and journaling.

Q: You’re a veteran actor, it was stated you confer with your kids about which roles to take…

JS: Absolutely! [But] my kids are old [now…my granddaughter is in her second year of college]. The reason I did “ The Get Down” is because the kids said, ‘you should do it.’

Q: You practice journaling and counting days…

ML: 10,472 is the day… It’s something that started with – I’m the youngest of four so my full name is Oluwambefunmi Ayotunde Michael Luwoye. Ayotunde is the namesake of my brother who passed away. My brother is Babatunde, which means the father has come to the world. My name means joy has come to the world or joy has come back to the world. He lived to be about eight months then died. That’s such a short amount of time, there’s some poem, I can’t remember what it is, but it mentions something about how if you’ve lived a full year, at some point you’ve passed your death day. And he never did. He never reached that day. Never having a full year, so that’s something that’s always impacted me. It just made me feel like it’s important for me to count my days. In a lot of the things I do, I have a starting point and count my days from that point.

Q: What was it like working with Caitlin McGee (who plays Sydney Strait)?

JS: She’s great! She’s able to access her emotional core. You really want to have a scene partner, especially if you’re working with this kind of terrain, that you can trust. She’s game. She brought her ‘A’ game to the pilot episode. One of the great things about the cast is they all have theater backgrounds, to me that’s really a blessing. I’ve always felt I function better in this kind of ensemble mode. I’m thankful the cast is so diverse.
