Yeah, Wendy’s Been Renewed, but … There’s Lots More to the Story

*Yesterday, if you recall, we brought you news of “The Wendy Williams Show” being renewed for two more years through 2022.  In fact, Wendy made the announcement, herself.

“Attention, Wendy staff and crew and everybody gather around,” Williams said on the Season 11 premiere, “and you on TV and you here. ‘The Wendy Show’ has been renewed through 2022. I love you!”

BTW, it was earlier in Monday’s season 11 opener that Williams let slip that the “Jerry O’ Show,” Jerry O’Connell’s daytime talk show that tested in her timeslot in August, wasn’t picked up. Her producer, however, quickly corrected her, saying that wasn’t entirely true and that Debmar-Mercury, the production distribution company behind both Williams’ and O’Connell’s shows, was still trying to sell it.

That’s interesting news, but the really BIG deal, according to Page Six, is that Williams’ show was most likely renewed only because Debmar-Mercury didn’t have another show to fill her slot.

“They don’t have anyone strong enough to replace her. They were back into a corner,” our insider said. “She will surely not be coming back beyond the two-season renewal.

“This will be her swan song.”

So yeah, Wendy knows she’s only got 2 more years before she’s done. At least with this show.

Meanwhile, in the official announcement for the show’s renewal, Frank Cicha, executive vice president of programming at FOX Television Stations, joked that Williams’ wigs help keep the show alive.

“Wendy is family to us, and post-AM news, her program jumpstarts the day in our markets,” Cicha said in a statement. “Plus, she’s got enough wigs to make sure the show never gets stale.”

Hmm, we wonder if Wendy’s laughing. But we do know that the gossip maven subtly stuck it to her estranged husband, Kevin Hunter, with updated executive producer credits on her show.

As the credits rolled at the end of the Season 11 premiere of her eponymous talk show on Monday, the line underneath “Executive Producer” snappily read “Just Wendy,” noted Page Six which added this:

Hunter’s name was wiped from the credits last year after Williams, 55, fired him from the show following their divorce announcement. Following his ouster, only Williams’ name remained on the credits. But now that she declared she’s “going harder than ever” on her new season, it appears she really wanted to stick it to her soon-to-be ex-husband.
