The consummate, outstanding performer Jeffrey Wright (Hobie) shines in “The Goldfinch,” which is rather dull. “The Goldfinch” does have that mystical feeling.  The Goldfinch, a priceless painting, survives a terror attack at the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art in New York. Make no mistake, however, “The Goldfinch” does have a lot of drama. It runs the gamut from betrayal, substance abuse, an unrequited love affair, drug dealing to murder.

“The Goldfinch” is the film adaptation of Donna Tartt‘s globally acclaimed bestseller of the same name, which won the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and spent more than 30 weeks on The New York Times Best Sellers list. In the film, Theodore “Theo” Decker (Ansel Elgort) was 13 years old when his mother was killed in a bombing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

That tragedy changes the course of his life, sending him on a stifling odyssey of grief and guilt, reinvention and redemption, and love. Through it all, he holds on to one tangible piece of hope from that terrible day—a painting of a tiny bird chained to its perch, The Goldfinch. Hobie even refers The Goldfinch as a mysterious marvel. He says, “Miracle after miracle, it survives.”

Without question, one of Theo’s most impactful and enduring connections is with Hobie, an antiques dealer who lives and works in Greenwich Village.  Hobie, who Theo later lives with,  serves as a father figure and mentor to child, and later adult, Theo. It’s ironic that in Elgort’s film, “Baby Driver,” he lived with and took care of the mute CJ Jones, who is also black.

Directed by John Crowley, “The Goldfinch” also stars Nicole Kidman, Sarah Paulson, Oakes Fegley, Aneurin Barnard, Finn Wolfhard, Ashleigh Cummings, and Luke Wilson.
