RZA Speaks on the Challenges of Creating Hulu’s ‘Wu-Tang: An American Saga’

The new Hulu series Wu-Tang Clan: An American Saga gives you the origin story of one hip hop’s most electrifying groups of the 90’s.

The series was co-created/written by the Clan’s RZA – who also acts as showrunner – and Alex Tse (“Watchmen,” “SuperFly”)

Coming on the heels of the 25th anniversary of Wu-Tang’s debut album, “Enter The Wu (36 Chambers)” and Showtime’s four-part docu-series “Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics and Men,” this 10-part drama series shows the gritty side of the group’s beginnings.

We’re introduced to Bobby (Ashton Sanders,) Dennis (Siddiq Saunderson,) Sha (Shameik Moore,) Gary (Johnelle Young,) Shotgun (Dave East,) Rebel (Joey Bada$$) and Ason (TJ Adams) or as fans call them; RZA, Ghostface Killa, Raekwon, GZA, Method Man, Inspectah Deck and Ol’ Dirty Bastard in early 90’s Staten Island New York during the crack epidemic.

EURweb’s Jill Munroe attend Paleyfest – the premier television festival that brings audiences a closer look at their favorite series and the talent behind it – where she spoke with RZA, series co-creator Alex Tse and two of the cast members, Johnell Young and Zolee Griggs (Shurrie Diggs.)

RZA shared what the most complicated thing was in completing a project that involves your personal life story.

“The most complicated thing from writing is to get what’s off the page, to actually happen in production. Me and my partner Alex (Tse) are big imagination guys. We wanted every episode to have a distinct and unique appeal to it. If you notice in episode 1, it starts very gritty. In episode 2 we kinda give a little animation in there. And then you see episode 3 you get the real hip hop rap battle that happened in my neighborhood when I was a kid. It was difficult to capture every nuance. No matter how much money you got or how much time you got, we are recreating the past. It’s hard to recreate something that’s already happened.

Wu-Tang: An American Saga is now streaming on Hulu.
