*NBA legend and Hornets owner Michael Jordan has pledged a $1 million donation to the relief efforts in the Bahamas in wake of Hurricane Dorian.

Jordan’s manager, Estee Portnoy, released a statement Tuesday on behalf of her client.

“I am devastated to see the destruction that Hurricane Dorian has brought to the Bahamas, where I own property and visit frequently,” Jordan said in a statement through his business manager and spokesperson, Estee Portnoy. “My heart goes out to everyone who is suffering and to those who have lost loved ones. As the recovery and relief efforts continue, I will be tracking the situation closely and working to identify non-profit agencies where the funds will have the most impact. The Bahamian people are strong and resilient and I hope that my donation will be of help as they work to recover from this catastrophic storm.”

The Category 5 storm hit the Bahamas on Sept. 1. Health Minister Duane Sands confirmed 50 deaths on Monday. However, that number is expected to rise as thousands remain missing or displaced.

“The situation is pretty dire here,” college student Kristoff Strachan on Grand Bahama told MSNBC by phone over the weekend. “It’s just a lot of people trying to get out.”

According to the report, rescue workers were going door to door and U.S. Coast Guard helicopters were evacuating critically injured residents.

As reported by sportingnews.com, Jordan previously donated $2 million to Hurricane Florence relief in his hometown of Wilmington, North Carolina, last September.

Jordan joins a slew of celebrities who have donated money to the Bahamas after Dorian, including Tyler Perry who flew his personal plane full of supplies to the affected areas.

Hurricane Dorian left more than 70,000 people homeless in the Bahamas.
