Stuck In a Rut? Here Are Ways to Get Back To You

*There comes a time in your life every now and then when you feel like you are stuck in a loop; like you’re just going through the motions of life but not going anywhere forward. You may also feel what you are doing is useless and does not matter.

Getting stuck in a rut is a common phenomenon, slightly more so for the Black youth with their additional range of problems and plights they must maneuver through on a daily basis. With that said, it is important that your recognize that you are in a rut and do take some concrete measures to get out of it.

We have put together some of the ways you can help yourself out of the rut and get back to life with full vigor and enthusiasm.

Recognize the Problem

It all starts by honestly admitting to yourself that you are stuck in a rut. You may feel like you’re not getting equal opportunities at your workplace because of your color or are treated differently. Similarly, there may be problems back home which are keeping you from living to the fullest. Realize that your unhappy and underperforming self is not the real you. Forgive yourself for not realizing this earlier and letting it drag on for this long. Instead of grieving over what could’ve been done if you recognized the problem earlier, start addressing the problem now and make amends.

Admit That Life Is Not Fair

You may feel you’re treated differently than your white counterparts when you go out in the job market, but do not let this stop you from going altogether. Life is tough for Black kids in the world of today, but that should not keep you from trying. Instead, you should use your skills and talent to let your voice be heard and represent your entire race.

Seek Inspiration from History

When you really feel you’re stuck and not going anywhere, look back at your history for some inspiration. As a race, we have come a long way in the last 400 years despite all the challenges that we’ve faced. Things are better than they were 400 years ago for us. Even though the fight for equal rights continues to this day, we can still achieve great things in life.

Get Involved With the Community or Work for a Cause

If you feel dejected at the way things are for the Blacks such as the unequal job opportunities or unequal pay or treatment at work, you’ll feel much better by getting involved with the community or working for a cause. Sign up and volunteer for organizations that are working to promote equal rights for African Americans or for any other cause that you feel strongly about and take ownership of your community. Provide counseling to young black children in your community or be their mentor.

By recognizing the problem, standing up for your rights, and helping others, it will be easier for you to regain motivation to continue working for your race and community.
