*The White man from Michigan who shot a Black teen simply because he knocked on his door has been sentenced. 53-year-old Jeffery Zeigler has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for assault while intending to cause great bodily harm. His charges also included using his firearm for a felony.
“I Am Full of Remorse and Regret”
Zeigler will reportedly have to spend about 4 years in prison before he will become eligible for parole. This is because both his sentences need to be served consecutively. When he was asked for a statement, he said that he was full of remorse and regret and that he wished that he could change something.
The Incident
In mid-April, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook posts read, “14 y/o Black teen misses the bus to school & figures he knew the route well enough to walk the 4-mile route. He gets lost, stops to ask for directions, & nearly loses his life.”
In mid-April, 14-year-old Brennan Walker stopped by Zeigler’s house simply to ask for directions because he had missed his school bus. When he got to the house and knocked, a lady answered and started yelling at him. She said, “Why are you trying to break into my house?”
When Walker was explaining why he knocked on her door, the woman just continued to yell at him. This is when Zeigler came downstairs and went right for his gun. When Walker saw this, he began to run and this retired firefighter began shooting at the Black teen.
CCTV Footage
To prove that the innocent teenager wasn’t trying to break into the 53-year-old man’s house, the CCTV footage had been released. The video depicted that the child was innocent and nearly lost his life for asking directions.
Well, Zeigler sticks to his original claim that he believed the kid was trying to break into his house and was still convicted for his crimes. His attorney Robert J. Morad let the Times know that they were hoping that the judge would be a little more lenient but as you may see in the CCTV footage, Zeigler had no mercy in him.
