Weekend Watch: Intense Thriller ‘Don’t Let Go’ is Like a Ramped Up ‘Frequency’

Storm Reid  and David Oyelowo in a scene from “Don’t Let Go.”

One of my all-time favorite movies is “Frequency” with Dennis Quaid, Jim Caviezel, and Andre Braugher—all of whom I interviewed for that junket back in 2000.

It follows the Caviezel character’s efforts to save his dad (Quaid) from being killed thirty years earlier, while solving a murder in the process.

This is all possible because Caviezel talks to his dad on his ham radio. The intense thriller “Don’t Let Go” is like a ramped-up modern-day “Frequency.”

Instead of the radio, Los Angeles detective (David Oyelowo) uses the cell phone of his murdered niece, Ashley (Storm Reid), to solve her murder. Ashley, being collateral damage, is caught up in the execution of her parents.

Jack Radcliff (Oyelowo), gave the cell to Ashley because her parents do not come anywhere near being model citizens, or reliable. The film begins with Jack picking up Ashley after a movie because neither one of her parents showed up. Later in the film, Jack receives a disturbing call from Ashley and rushes to her home to find everyone murdered—even the dog. The case is labeled a murder-suicide. Jack’s brother (Brian Tyree Henry) has a sketchy past. Aware of this fact, Jack’s suspicions prompt him to steal Ashley’s cell. He gets more than he bargains for when Ashley calls him from her cell. Wrought with grief, Jack thinks he is having a mental breakdown.

Time and space collide in “Don’t Let Go.”

After realizing the call is real, Jack has only a few days to solve the murder mystery. With the help of Ashley it’s a race against time to save her life, and possibly the lives of her parents.

This nail-biting, sci-fi, action, time-warping suspense drama will keep moviegoers on the edge of their seats until the final frame of the film. The fine performances make this unreal supernatural story seem real at every turn.

Directed by Jacob Estes, “Don’t Let Go” also stars Mykelti Williamson, Alfred Molina, and Byron Mann.
