Burnout: Steps to Take When You Are Running On Empty

*Stress is simply the only thing standing between what you’re doing and what you’re trying to achieve. Isn’t it a fact of life that things don’t always work out the way you wish them to? We have all experienced this and this is when stress morphs into a full-scale burnout.

Stress + stress+ even more stress+ way too much stress= Burnout

So what is it that you can do when you are running on empty? Here’s what we think works every time.

1.     Hit Your Rest Button

The very first step here is to use HALT and ask yourself the following questions: Am I tired? Am I lonely? Am I anxious? Am I hungry? A deficiency in either one of these factors leads to the feeling of burning out – which means it is now time to make some changes.

If you’re looking for an immediate boost, however, just take long and deep breaths for about 90 seconds to drift into meditation mode. Daily meditation will keep your stress and anxiety levels low and reduce any chances of burnout.

2.     Remind Yourself of Your Sense of Purpose

People who identify their lives have a source of purpose and meaning tend to feel greater levels of satisfaction. These people also have higher levels of both mental and physical health alongside a greater sense of control and higher levels of resilience.

If you are one of these people and feel an upcoming burnout, then you need to remind yourself of your purpose.

3.     Is Your Burnout Coming from Comparison?

In a world where we have 293,000 status updates, 136,000 photos upload and 510 comments every minute, it is safe to assume that you will make comparisons. The problem with comparisons is that they can either lead to you feeling good or bad.

If you think that you are comparing yourself to anybody but yourself, then you need to STOP right away.

4.     Assess Your Levels of Self Compassion

It has been said before that compassion will never be complete if it isn’t extended to the self as well. This is ironically the most difficult and critical aspect of compassion. To test yourself, give yourself a few days to understand how you speak to yourself.

According to experts, if you think that you couldn’t speak to a colleague or friend in the manner you speak to yourself, then you probably need to begin being kind to yourself.

Go ahead and celebrate your successes. Take a walk. Book a massage. When you are running on empty, it is an opportunity for you to flourish and move forward.
