*Warner Bros. announced on Tuesday that a new “Matrix” film is officially headed into production in 2020— with Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss reprising their roles as Neo and Trinity, respectively.

The original “Matrix” was released on March 31, 1999, and grossed over $460 million worldwide. It won four Academy Awards and led to the release of two sequels, “The Matrix Reloaded” and “The Matrix Revolutions,” directed by Lana Wachowski and Lilly Wachowski. Lana is reportedly on-board to direct the latest installment in the franchise.

“We could not be more excited to be re-entering ‘The Matrix’ with Lana,” said Warner Bros. Picture Group chairman Toby Emmerich. “Lana is a true visionary—a singular and original creative filmmaker—and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in ‘The Matrix’ universe.”

The three previous films collectively earned more than $1.6 billion at the global box office. All three were written and directed by Lana and Lilly, and starred Reeves and Moss.

“Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now,” Wachowski reportedly said. “I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.”

Before Keanu landed the lead in the original film, the producers briefly considered a woman for the role of Neo, — and that woman was Sandra Bullock, TheWrap reported.

Bullock was one of several A-listers considered for the part, including Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio and Will Smith.

Smith addressed his short-lived involvement with “The Matrix” on his YouTube channel back in February.

“They came in and they made a pitch for ‘The Matrix’ and, as it turns out, they’re geniuses,” Smith said of his meeting with the Wachowskis. “But there’s a fine line in a pitch meeting between genius and what I experienced in the meeting.”

He said he was confused by the plot, but agreed that Reeves was the right star for the role.

“Keanu [Reeves] was perfect. Laurence Fishburne was perfect,” Smith said. “If I had done it then Morpheus wouldn’t have been black, because they were looking at Val Kilmer.”

The “Matrix” producers even considered Arnold Schwarzenegger for the role of Morpheus, which ultimately went to Fishburne.
