*As Lil Nas X continues to dominate the Billboard charts with his mega-hit “Old Town Road,” the overnight success has landed the cover of TIME, in which he explains how he knew it was time for him to come out of the closet.

In a new interview with Time, the 20-year-old explains that from a young age he was taught that homosexuality “is never going to be OK.” But during Pride Week, he felt as if the “universe” was pushing him to open up about his sexuality.

“I never would have done that if I wasn’t in a way pushed by the universe,” he says. “In June, I’m seeing Pride flags everywhere and seeing couples holding hands — little stuff like that.”

Lil Nas first hinted about his sexuality when he told fans to listen to his song “C7osure (You Like),” and noted the gay rainbow on his album cover. In July he tweeted: “Wow man last year I was sleeping on my sisters floor, had no money, struggling to get plays on my music, suffering from daily headaches, now i’m gay.”

Since coming out, he has received some backlash but also support from fans and the hip-hop community.

Rapper Young Thug explained in an interview with BET.com why he’s concerned about the backlash that Lil Nas will face going forward.

“He shouldn’t have told the world. It’s like these days…it’s just all judgment. It ain’t even about the music no more,” Thugger said. “Once [people] found out he was gay, soon as the song come on now, everybody like this gay a** nigga. People don’t even care to listen to the song no more.”

He called Nas’ decision to come out during Pride Month a “G’s move.”

“I just feel like he young, and backlash can come behind anything. He young, so I know what he going to be dealing with it in his mind. I know what he dealing with. So I was like, ‘F**k, he should have never said that [and] never should have told them.’”

Lil Nas X’s coming out story has not affected the charts because “Old Town Road” is the longest-running No. 1 song in history.

“Everything lined up for this moment to take me to this place,” Lil Nas tells TIME. “Not to sound self-centered, but it feels like I’m chosen, in a way, to do this stuff.”

He previously admitted that he was hesitant to come out as gay but said he was “opening doors for more people” by doing so.
