Weekend Watch: Depraved ‘Good Boys,’ Enlightening ‘Blinded by the Light,’ and a Unified ‘Angry Birds 2’

(L-r) Lucas (Keith L. Williams), Thor (Brady Noon) and Max (Jacob Tremblay) in “Good Boys.” .

The depraved “Good Boys” is what you get when writers run out of ideas and throw creativity to the wind. When that happens, sex, drugs, and shock value are relied upon to make money. In this case, six graders are exploited for profit. It’s downright perverted to use “Superbad” (Seth Rogen is one of the producers) as a platform for kiddie trash. In “Good Boys,” children are mouthing sex toys and one kid pulls dried semen out of his mouth.

The kids use so many f*ck words, I stopped counting. And, twelve-year-old Max’s (Jacob Tremblay) father approves of him watching porn. Keith L. Williams (Lucas) said on national TV he didn’t want his grandmother to see the movie. How could any concerned parent allow his/her child to be involved in the making of such a deplorable project?

Invited to a kissing party, Max feels he can gain pointers by using his dad’s drone, which he has been forbidden to touch, to spy on a next-door neighbor making out. When things go awry and the drone is destroyed, it’s down the rabbit hole for the three as they skip school, get involved in a drug deal and run from cops.

Directed by Gene Stupnitsky, the film also stars   Brady Noon, Molly Gordon, Lil Rel Howery, and Will Forte.

Blinded by the Light

(L-r) Nell Williams (Eliza), Aaron Phagura  (Roops) and Viveik Kalra  (Javed) “Blinded by the Light.”

Blinded by the Light” shows just how pervasive racism is throughout the world. In what should be a time of enlightenment, ignorance prevails among the ruling class. “Blinded” is inspired by a true story, based on Sarfraz Manzoor’s memoir “Greetings from Bury Park: Race, Religion and Rock N’ Roll.”

Javed (Viveik kalra) is bullied, spat on and told to go back home, as bigots march for a whites-only nation. Sounds familiar? What’s unique in the U.S. is the fact that the ignorant leader of the so-called free world tells U.S. citizens to go back home when he himself came from another country. His ancestors arrived in America, stole the land from the indigenous Natives and put them on reservations.

“Blinded” tells the story of Javed, a British teen of Pakistani descent growing up in the town of Luton, England. Amidst the racial and economic turmoil of the times, he writes poetry as a means of escape. Classmate Roops (Aaron Phagura) introduces him to Bruce Springsteen’s music and Javed discovers a cathartic outlet and courage to express himself in his own unique voice.

Directed by Gurinder Chadha, “Blinded” also stars Kulvinder Ghir, Meera Ganatra, Nell Williams, Hayley Atwell, and Dean-Charles Chapman.

Glenn (Eugenio Derbez), Zeta (Leslie Jones) and Debbie (Tiffany Haddish) in “Angry Birds 2.”

The Angry Birds Movie 2

In “The Angry Birds Movie 2,” the birds and the green piggies face a bigger threat than their ongoing beef. They must join forces to save their islands. Icy projectiles are being fired from Eagle Island, over which Zeta (Leslie Jones) reigns. Tired of the frozen conditions of her world, Zeta decides to seize Bird and Piggy Islands to create a new paradise—for herself. Zeta, a spurned, snaggletooth, single mom plans to take no prisoners.

“Angry Birds 2” is a great lesson in teamwork. However, although Zeta is purple, there is no mistake she comes from the hood.

Directed by Thurop Van Orman, “Angry Birds 2” is also voiced by Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride, Peter Dinklage, Rachel Bloom, Bill Hader, Sterling K. Brown, Awkwafina, and Tiffany Haddish.
