Oprah and Gayle King Dish About Their Unbreakable Bond in First Joint O Magazine Cover

gayle, oprah*Oprah Winfrey and her bestie Gayle King open up about their decades-long friendship for the September issue of O, The Oprah Magazine, which features the two on the cover.

King tweeted the cover photo on Wednesday, writing, “We’ve been friends since we were 21 & 22! 40 plus years later here we are!”

The CBS This Morning co-host later added that Winfrey is her “ride or die.”

Winfrey told ET’s Nischelle Turner: “People come up to me all the time and introduce their friends to me as, ‘This is my Gayle,'” she explained. “So I think it means something. Someone asked me the other day, how is it that our friendship has lasted so long. It’s because she has a life of her own and now people can see that she has a life of her own.”

In a story accompanying the cover, Winfrey reflected on the first time she and Gayle met at a Baltimore TV news station where Oprah was a co-anchor and King was a production assistant.

“We were colleagues, not friends, but I invited her to spend the night at my place,” Winfrey wrote. “We sat up and talked till dawn and have been talking ever since.”

Winfrey later noted that people often ask King if she ever felt like she was living in O’s shadow.

“The truth is, she always felt not a shadow, but the light,” Winfrey wrote. “We couldn’t have remained friends if she’d perceived it as a shadow. I would have sensed that, and I wouldn’t have been able to be as open.”

She added, “A true friend can’t be jealous of you, or want to take advantage of you in any way.”

Oprah noted of their friendship: “And no matter how many ventures or adventures we undertake — whatever life has to offer — we’ll be in each other’s corner. Solid. Timeless. Forever.”

In her Instagram post on Wednesday, King shared a sweet message to her best gal pal: “Our first (and never to be duplicated) @oprahmagazine cover! we have each other’s backs always I believe it’s called ‘ride or die’ …@oprah is the truth in all things full stop… this was suppose to be an inside shot and the o of o said make it a cover …thanx Oprah!”
