*In “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and Shaw (Jason Statham) are on a fast track to complete a mission, but still furious with one another.
The animosity is a carryover from previous “Fast & Furious” films. Not to be outdone by the franchise’s preceding fast cars, high jinxes, and fights, the stakes for “Hobbs & Shaw” are high.
On the plus side, there is cyber-genetically enhanced bad guy Brixton Lorr (Idris Elba). He brings the stunning stunt of slipping under a truck on a motorcycle and his, “I’m black Superman” bravado. And, he has the skills only a cyborg super-villain can possess to take down both Hobbs and Shaw in a fight. Adding to the attractions, we see a stripped-down Hobbs go native in his homeland of Samoa.
Kudos to the filmmakers’ ode against gun violence in the Samoan showdown. Hobb’s mom did away with guns on the island and hand-to-hand combat took precedence over assault weapons. The rock steady soundtrack keeps up with the pace of the film—to a point that is.

Now comes the downside. A generation that grew up on and fed non-stop action movies, incessant fight scenes, guns galore, and gibberish banter is easy to please. Suffice to say, “Hobbs & Shaw” will be a hit in spite of the downsides that include a shabby plot and regurgitated storyline. “Hobbs & Shaw” got its theme from “Mission: Impossible 2.” Thandie Newton, who plays Ethan Hunt’s (Tom Cruise) love interest, injects herself with the Chimera virus.
When Brixton gains control of the insidious bio-threat that could alter humanity forever—and bests rogue MI6 agent (Vanessa Kirby), she injects herself with the virus. Sworn enemies, Hobbs and Shaw, partner up to bring down Brixton and secure the safety of the universe.
Directed by David Leitch, “Hoss & Shaw” also stars Cliff Curtis, Helen Mirren, and Eiza Gonzalez.
