Mario Lopez Apologizes for His ‘Ignorant and Insensitive’ Comments About Transgender Toddlers [VIDEO]

*Mario Lopez has walked back on comments he made in a recent interview in which he said it was “dangerous” for parents of children as young as 3-years-old to label their kids transgender.

Lopez appeared on “The Candace Owens Show” in June, where the conservative commentator noted “this new trend where celebrities are coming out … and saying that their child is picking their gender.”

In response, Lopez said he too was “kind of blown away” by this mentality.

“Look, I’m never one to tell anyone how to parent their kids, obviously, and I think if you come from a place of love, you really can’t go wrong,” he said. “But at the same time, my God, if you’re 3 years old and you’re saying you’re feeling a certain way, or you think you’re a boy or a girl or whatever the case may be, I just think it’s dangerous as a parent to make that determination then — ‘Okay, well then you’re going to be a boy or a girl,’ whatever the case may be. It’s sort of alarming and my gosh, I just think about the repercussions later on.”

Owens then noted that toddlers can not make decisions about sexuality and gender identity.

“When you’re a kid … You don’t know anything about sexuality, you’re just a kid.”

Lopez suggested parents “be the adult” in situations when a toddler claims to be of the opposite gender, and wait until the child’s “formative years” to have discussions regarding gender identity.

“I personally think it’s just way too young to start making these… I know other parents who have certain parenting styles that I necessarily don’t agree with, but I do know they’re good people and they’re coming from a good place,” he said.

For some curious reason, the media has decided to put the spotlight on this month-old interview, and the trans community is outraged. Many have suggested online that toddlers fully understand gender and sexuality.

Meanwhile, the hashtag #IStandWithMario is also trending on Twitter.

In a statement to PEOPLE on Wednesday, Lopez apologized for his remarks, clearly in an effort to save his career.

“The comments I made were ignorant and insensitive, and I now have a deeper understanding of how hurtful they were,” he said. “I have been and always will be an ardent supporter of the LGBTQ community, and I am going to use this opportunity to better educate myself. Moving forward I will be more informed and thoughtful.”

Candance responded to his apology on Twitter, writing: “PSA: Bullying people into issuing public statements of apology so that they can keep their careers— because they state a FACT—that 3 year olds are not equipped to make life-altering decisions— is why @realDonaldTrump is your President.”
