*The Baltimore Sun newspaper has issued a response to President Trump’s attacks on the city and House Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), over parts of the lawmaker’s majority-black district that he represents.
In a series of tweets over the weekend, Trump described Baltimore and surrounding areas as a “rat and rodent infested mess” and a “very dangerous & filthy place” where “no human being would want to live.” He concluded by calling Cummings a “racist.”
“Better to have a few rats than to be one,” the Baltimore Sun’s editorial declared in its headline in response to Trump’s attack, per the Washington Post.

“We regularly mock some of the things [Trump] does, but I think to call the president of the United States a rat or a vermin . . . that’s a new place to go,” Sun editorial writer Peter Jensen told The Washington Post. “But my gut instinct as I was writing the editorial was that that was the inescapable conclusion.”
The Sun went on to point out that “The congressman has been a thorn in this president’s side, and Mr. Trump sees attacking African American members of Congress as good politics, as it both warms the cockles of the white supremacists who love him and causes so many of the thoughtful people who don’t to scream,” the editorial board wrote.
The newspaper added that it “would tell the most dishonest man to ever occupy the Oval Office, the mocker of war heroes, the gleeful grabber of women’s private parts, the serial bankrupter of businesses, the useful idiot of Vladimir Putin and the guy who insisted there are ‘good people’ among murderous neo-Nazis that he’s still not fooling most Americans into believing he’s even slightly competent in his current post,” the Sun said.
As Trump continues to be criticized for his comments on Cummings and Baltimore, he denies any of it has to do with race.
“There is nothing racist in stating plainly what most people already know, that Elijah Cummings has done a terrible job for the people of his district, and of Baltimore itself,” Trump said Sunday afternoon. “Dems always play the race card when they are unable to win with facts. Shame!”
He also wrote on Twitter “Crazy Bernie Sanders recently equated the City of Baltimore to a THIRD WORLD COUNTRY! Based on that statement, I assume that Bernie must now be labeled a Racist, just as a Republican would if he used that term and standard! The fact is, Baltimore can be brought back, maybe……”
