‘The Lion King’s’ Rotten Tomatoes Score Disappoints

*Disney’s live-action reboot of “The Lion King” is generating mixed-to negative reviews and is close to being certified rotten on Rotten Tomatoes.

While there’s a lot of excitement surrounding the film, it has failed to score 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Unfortunately, the Jon Favreau-directed feature currently sits at 58% based on 100 reviews from critics, per comicbookmovie.com

According to the Critics Consensus, “While it can take pride in its visual achievements, The Lion King is a by-the-numbers retelling that lacks the energy and heart that made the original so beloved–though for some fans that may just be enough.”

Via Cinema Blend:

With only 89 reviews totaled up as of this printing, The Lion King is currently at a 58% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, falling just below the 60% threshold to be known as a Fresh film. This comes from 52 Fresh reviews and 38 Rotten rankings, with the critical consensus basically panning the film for being more of a visual masterpiece than one of story.

It’s a far cry from the 1994 original’s Tomatometer reading of 93%, coming from 127 reviews, but there’s still time for The Lion King’s numbers to rise though. Some critics have yet to take their place on the path unwinding to the film’s proper release date.

“The Lion King” launched in China this weekend, where it amassed $54.7 million. Variety writes: “That means that, in 72 hours, “The Lion King” has already out-earned Disney’s other two live-action remakes released in China this year, pushing past “Aladdin’s” $53.5 million in May and “Dumbo’s” $21.9 million in March.”

“The Lion King” opens in theaters nationwide on July 19.
