Former NFLer Albert Haynesworth in ‘Dire Need’ of a Kidney Donor

Albert Haynesworth

*After battling kidney disease for “a few years,” former NFL defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth is “in dire need of a kidney,” he said Wednesday in an Instagram post that shows him in a hospital bed (see below).

Haynesworth, 38, said his kidneys failed him on Sunday, and his doctors suggested he reach out to his family, friends, and fans with this request.

“It’s hard to believe from being a professional athlete to only 8 season(s) in retirement that my body has taken another major blow. First with the brain aneurism 3 seasons out of the NFL to now my kidneys failing me,” he wrote.

Haynesworth suffered two brain aneurysms that nearly killed him in 2014.

“Nobody really knows: I almost died,” he told ESPN. “I had two brain aneurysms that were nearly rupturing. I went and talked to my doctor in Florida, and he was like, ‘Man, your blood pressure is through the roof. I’m going to admit you.’ They did a lot of tests and found the aneurysm that was rupturing at that point.”

Albert played 10 seasons in the NFL, with Tennessee, Washington, New England and Tampa Bay, retiring after the 2011 season.

“If you are interested in giving this precious gift please call Vanderbilt at 615-936-0695 and hit option 2,” Haynesworth wrote on IG this week. “GOD BLESS thank you for your prayers and thanks for sharing this message.”

In related news, on Wednesday, President Trump signed an executive order aimed at revolutionizing kidney care for the more than 37 million Americans with kidney disease.

“Today we are taking groundbreaking action to bring new hope to millions of Americans suffering from kidney disease,” Trump said. “So many things don’t get done in government, but now we are getting them done.”

Kidney disease is a growing public health problem, as obesity is a known risk factor, as well as family history, high blood pressure and diabetes.
