Watch Tracy Morgan’s Bomb-Azz ESPY Awards Monologue (Emphasis on BOMB)

*As you may or may not know, the 2019 ESPY Awards were held last night with comedian Tracy Morgan as host/MC. The moment he opened his mouth, we knew it was gonna be a long night.

In fact, Twitter is backing us up. Dude is trending on the social network and not in a good way, either. Do we need to tell ya that most viewers of the show were not feeling him?

We have no idea of why or how he got the gig. It was like he was stuck in a time warp. A huge amount of his material centered around the large settlement he got from Walmart, after his car was struck by a Walmart truck, leaving him critically injured. We guess in Morgan’s mind the accident was in recent times, but to rest of the world, that reality happened 5 years ago. It essentially put the spotlight on the comedian rather than the athletes.

On top of that, some of his other jokes came off as being out of step with today’s social climate.

“Everyone’s into fantasy football but when Janet Jackson’s boob popped out, to me, that was fantasy football,” said Morgan. If that wasn’t awkward enough, he talked about how weird Adam Levine’s nipples looked when he performed with Maroon 5 during the 2019 Super Bowl.

It just wasn’t Morgan’s night. He appeared to struggle with reading from the teleprompter at times, impacting his delivery and performance. Most of the reaction shots from the live audience showed athletes sporting uncomfortable smiles or blank expressions. But as the monologue dragged on, more laughter could be heard, if not seen. Some viewers claimed the laughter was more a result of sound technicians adding laughs, rather than Morgan earning them.

Ultimately, comedy is subjective. That being said, social media reactions are often a good indicator of how something lands with the audience. And in this case, Morgan’s opening monologue was not well-received.
