*According to a new Morning Consult poll, 12 percent of potential Democratic primary voters say they are down with Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), who made headlines last week for confronting former Vice President Joe Biden about his seemingly racist views.
As reported by The Hill, this new poll figure represents a 6 percentage point surge from an identical poll released last week. The outlet notes that Harris still trails Sen. Bernie Sanders(I-Vt.) and Biden by solid margins.
Thirty-three percent of poll participants picked Biden as their top choice. Meanwhile, 19 percent preferred Sanders.
FiveThirtyEight partnered with Morning Consult to track how feelings about the candidates change by interviewing people — who are likely to vote in the Democratic primary — before and after the first two primary debates.

Among all 20 candidates, Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren and Julián Castro earned the highest scores for their debate performances relative to their favorability rating before they took the stage, according to the voters in our poll. Bernie Sanders and Cory Booker also rated well, but their scores were more in line with their pre-debate favorability. Meanwhile, voters didn’t exactly think Beto O’Rourke did badly on Night 1, but his grades were underwhelming given his popularity.
A further breakdown of the poll results:
Biden from 41.5% to 31.5%
Sanders 14.4% to 17.3%
Harris 7.9% to 16.6%
Warren 12.6% to 14.4%
Buttigieg 6.7% to 4.8%
Booker 0.3% to 2.8%
O’Rourke from 3.6% to 2.2%
Harris’s rise comes after her heated back-and-forth with Biden after she criticized his opposition to busing to desegregate schools.
“There was a little girl in California who was part of the second class to integrate her public schools and she was bused to school every day,” Harris said to Biden. “That little girl was me.”
As we previously reported, Harris had sharp words for the former VP’s record on racial segregation during an extended argument at the Democratic primary debate on Thursday night.

Harris broke into a conversation about race by pointing out she was the only black woman on stage. She recounted discrimination she experienced growing up, then turned to Biden, who earlier this month fondly recalled collaborating with segregationists during his long Senate career.
“I do not believe you are a racist. And I agree with you when you commit yourself to the importance of finding common ground,” Harris said. “But it was hurtful to hear you talk about the reputations of two United States senators who built their reputations and career on the segregation of race in this country.”
Biden called Harris’s criticism a “mischaracterization” of his views.
The Morning Consult post-debate poll was conducted between June 27 and June 28 among a 2,407 registered voters.
