Cardi B Wins Songwriter of the Year Honors at 34th Annual ASCAP Awards (EUR Exclusive!)

*The 2019 ASCAP Awards took place Thursday night in Beverly Hills. Cardi B. took home the award for “songwriter of the year” – the first female rapper to receive the award in the event’s 34-year history.

In addition to that award, Cardi was also honored for her songwriting on such hit ASCAP songs as “Bartier Cardi” featuring 21 Savage, “Ring” featuring Kehlani, “Motorsport” with Migos and Nicki Minaji and “I Like It.”

The red carpet was filled with some of our favorite entertainers, executives and songwriters. EURweb’s Jill Munroe was in the building a spoke with Kehlani, songwriter James Fauntleroy (Cardi B & Bruno Mars “Please Me” and “Finesse,”) Angela Rye, Saweetie, ASCAP President Nicole George-Middleton, Rotimi and more.

The evening also featured the presentation of the ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Heritage award presented to Motown Records on their 60th  anniversary, to commemorate the label’s legacy. Original Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr. was on hand and received the honor from current president Ethiopia Habtemariam.

Performances for the evening featured BJ the Chicago Kid (“What’s Goin’ On”) and Ne-Yo (“My Girl”).

Another interesting twist to the evening featured some of the ASCAP songwriters performing the songs they received awards for that night. Nicole Bus opened with “You,” Joelle James performed the Ella Mai hit that she wrote, “Boo’d Up” A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie hit the stage to perform “Look Back at It” and gospel artist Jekalyn Carr treated the audience with “You Will Win.”

Rapper/activist Tip “T.I.” Harris received the inaugural Voice of the Culture Award from political commentator Angela Rye. In his speech, T.I. spoke about his walk from being just an artist to becoming more community and politically engaged.

“People like me come from a place where they usually don’t let us in these kinds of buildings to sit at tables with fancy tablecloths and nice silverware. So for us to be here is an extreme accomplishment. I’ve learned to use my voice to create a path for the future. I have always said that our culture is our greatest asset…I am a proud product of it and a fearless protector of it.

“I’m not being honored for anything that the rest of you in the audience can’t do, I’m just doing my little part and urge everybody else to do their part too. All of the success that I have and all the influence that I’ve gained ain’t going to mean sh*t if I don’t use it make the world a better place for my children to live in.”
