Celebration and Open Casting Call at Inglewood’s Willie Agee Playhouse

The Willie Agee Playhouse located within the pleasant, family-friendly grounds of Edward Vincent, Jr. Park in Inglewood (CA) is preparing to celebrate the third anniversary since its re-opening in the summer of 2016. The performing arts venue is currently seeking writers, directors, and actors to participate in their 10-minute Play Festival taking place on Saturday, August 17th from noon to 4pm.  The venue is also seeking street performers, balloon artists, and face painters to entertain spectators throughout the day as they stroll the tree-lined walkway inside the park.

“Our goal is to have a day to celebrate artists of every medium and commemorate the revival of The Willie Agee Playhouse,” said the event’s coordinator, Shelli Boone. “A collaboration of singers, craftspeople, actors, musicians, dancers, photographers, sculptors and performers of various genres coming together to entertain our Inglewood neighbors and promote local creatives.”

The venue, formerly called The Inglewood Playhouse, seating close to 60 guests, celebrated the rebirth of the site and the introduction of new quality performing arts programming for the community in June 2016. It was then dedicated to Mr. Willie Agee, renaming it “The Willie Agee Playhouse,” in recognition and appreciation of its 52-year Inglewood resident and Korean War Veteran, for his community service and leadership as Chairman of the Inglewood Parks and Recreation Commission.

The playhouse, located at 714 Warren Street, Inglewood, CA serves as a creative studio and/or stage and rehearsal space for local artists and performers. After being closed for over a decade, the venue was fitted with all new lighting, sound systems, a kitchenette, dressing room, prop & costume storage and restroom.

Since its revitalization, the theater space has hosted a myriad of events including stage plays, concerts, workshops, classes, staged readings, rehearsals, showcases, meetings and small gatherings.

The mission of The Willie Agee Playhouse is to foster local talent both on stage and behind the scenes, while simultaneously providing unique and diverse programming to residents right in their own backyard.

“Everyone who comes into the space always comments on the good energy,” said Boone. “Thankfully, it has become a safe haven for both established and novice creatives who want to get their work seen by the public. There’s no reason why people should have to travel outside of their neighborhood to gain access to the artist culture. We have it right here, and it’s only getting bigger and better.”

The Third Anniversary Celebration event will bring awareness to local artists and the talent that the area has to offer. It also serves to foster a community feeling inside the park, and to let residents know that it’s a safe place to commune and have fun.

Artists of all genres, directors and writers are invited to submit  their cover letters, scripts, headshots, resumes and videos for consideration to: [email protected].  The submissions deadline is July 1, 2019.
