Black Athletes Feature Prominently As Hublot Brand Ambassadors

athlete

*It’s clear that handsome and famous white actors like Chris Hemsworth, George Clooney, and Brad Pitt are all contracted as brand ambassadors for well-known watch companies (Tag Heuer, Omega, and Breitling, respectively), but there are millions of youths who don’t look up to these people as role models. If you’re a sports-obsessed black kid growing up in Illinois, for example, it’s perhaps more likely that a superstar athlete/Chicago native like Dwyane Wade would be your idol.

Understanding that sports stars are often far more impressionable than actors or models, Swiss watchmaker Hublot has eschewed typical Hollywood names and instead brought in several talented and popular black athletes to help promote the brand.

Kylian Mbappé

soccer

The most recent addition to the Hublot roster, Mbappé is one of the coolest and most gifted young soccer stars in the world right now. Those who follow the French soccer league would already know Mbappé from his exceptional playing time with Paris Saint-Germain, but he caught the attention of billions across the planet when he helped lift the championship trophy for France at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Dwyane Wade

basketball

Although he recently retired from playing professional basketball, Wade was an elite NBA player for well over a decade and was a fan favorite throughout it all. With three championships, a gold medal, and dozens of All-Star Game appearances during his career, it should be no surprise that Hublot would want a partnership with this great athlete. Even now, his signature Hublot Big Bang watch appears prominently on watch-selling sites as one of the most popular selections. Wade has several of his own clothing lines to take care of right now, but it’s likely that he’ll return as a TV analyst or commentator for the NBA at some point.

Floyd Mayweather

boxing

Viewed as the best boxer of all time by some, the now-retired Floyd Mayweather was so tough in the ring that he has never lost a fight in his professional career. With several world titles in five different weight classes, Mayweather is hailed for his great defensive techniques and incredibly accurate hits. In 2017, Mayweather made headlines around the world when he took on the MMA and UFC star, Conor McGregor, in a widely televised pay-per-view event. Mayweather ended up winning the event, but both fighters took home well over $100 million each for the contest.

Pelé

vintage soccer

At age 78, Brazilian soccer legend Pelé is still hugely popular around the world and regarded as a hero for his on-pitch skills and even off-pitch humanitarian efforts. Pelé won three championships for his country (1958, 1962, and 1970) and is still the all-time leading goalscorer for Brazil, with a total of 77 goals from 92 games. As of now, Pelé is heavily involved in ecological and environmental affairs, having been named a UN Ambassador and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for his help and involvement in these areas.

Usain Bolt

race

Arguably the best sprinter of all time, Usain Bolt was a must-see athlete during any of his Olympic races and a crowd favorite because of the famous “lightning bolt” celebration after every win. Raking in a total of nine gold medals and world records in the 100 meters, 200 meters, and 4 x 100 meters relay races. Some of his famous victories have even included images of Bolt turning his head to look at the competitors behind him, as well as a report that he won a gold medal with a shoelace untied.
