*“Shaft” is just as homophobic, misogynistic, and nasty as he was in the last century. But he’s an equal opportunity offender.
He doesn’t much care for millennials either. No matter his quirks or foibles, John Shaft (Samuel L. Jackson) always gets the job done.
This time around he gets the job done with the help of son J.J. (Jessie T. Usher), and dad John Shaft Sr. (Richard Roundtree).
J.J., aka John Shaft Jr., a cyber security expert with a degree from MIT, but his degree is no help to him in solving his best friend’s murder. Not having the street smarts to uncover the truth behind his friend’s untimely death, J.J. needs an education only his estranged dad can provide.
Now a hard-nosed detective, the always locked-and-loaded Shaft agrees to help J.J. navigate Harlem’s heroin-infested underbelly. While J.J.’s own FBI analyst’s badge may clash with his dad’s way of getting the truth, there’s no denying family. Besides, Shaft’s has an agenda of his own, and a score to settle that’s personal.
There are enough jokes, high jinks, and action to keep audiences entertained. Added attractions are Regina Hall (J.J.’s mom) and Richard Roundtree, who still has his mojo working and looking great.
Directed by Tim Story, the film also stars Alexandra Shipp, Matt Lauria, Method Man, Isaach De Bankolé, and Titus Welliver.
