‘When They See Us’ Director Ava DuVernay Says Exonerated Five Are Finally Being Believed – EUR Exclusive!

*Ava DuVernay, the Golden Globe and Academy Award nominated creative force behind “When They See Us” says Antron McCray, Korey Wise, Kevin Richardson, Raymond Santana and Yusef Salaam—once known as “The Central Park Five” now “The Exonerated Five” have received some peace since the airing of their gut-wrenching true story that chronicles their rape conviction and exoneration in a four-part limited series.

“I think they are getting some peace from the open arms of people that have received the story and the beautiful gestures of support and words of support that are coming from the audience,” said DuVernay. “People are finally seeing them, finally seeing their stories and believing them and it makes a difference.”

A screening and Q and A moderated by Oprah Winfrey that will air June 12 at 10:00 PM on OWN and NETFLIX. The series begins in the spring of 1989, when the teenagers were first questioned about the incident and spans 25 years, highlighting their exoneration in 2002 and the settlement reached with the city of New York in 2014.

DuVernay co-wrote and directed the four parts. Jeff Skoll and Jonathan King from Participant Media, Oprah Winfrey from Harpo Films, and Jane Rosenthal, Berry Welsh and Robert De Niro from Tribeca Productions executive produced the limited series alongside DuVernay through her banner, Forward Movement.
