‘South Side’: Chicago’s Getting Some Comedy Relief – WATCH

*Comedy isn’t the first thing you think about when you hear about the South Side of Chicago. Most news, shows or films that depict this neighborhood is definitely nothing to laugh about. But Comedy Central’s new show South Side is bringing viewers something different.

Picked up in 2017, South Side will air the ten episode season starting Wednesday, July 24 for audiences to get their favorite snack and have some laughs.

“Our process has been deliberate and careful. I think we knew and the network knew that what we were doing was special. We wanted the city to speak for itself.” Sultan added to his brother’s feelings by saying “And we also knew that our biggest critics would be the people from Chicago and their criticism is genuine, it’s real and it’s accurate.”

The show is set in Englewood, a South Side Chicago neighborhood. The hilarious tale follows two friends who just graduated from community college, now feeling like they’re ready to take over the world. But until they’re entrepreneurial dreams come true, Simon James and Kareem K Odom are stuck at Rent-T-Own. A retail–rental company ran by K’s twin brother, where the majority of their day is spent trying to get RTO property back from people who haven’t paid. Despite the obstacles of inner-city life, the pair and their co-workers all strive to survive another day of work without quitting or getting fired.

Chicago natives, brothers and creators Bashir Salahuddin (GLOW) and Sultan Salahuddin with Diallo Riddle (Marlon) wanted to keep it as authentic as possible. Which is what Diallo and Chandra Russell explained to EURweb.

“Almost everyone but myself in the writers’ room was from the South Side Chicago.” Russell jumped in explaining “Just from Chicago period, we had some diversity in there, a little North Side and a little West Side.” Riddle quickly agreed.
