Michelle Buteau & Daniel Dae Kim Talk Comedy and Swimsuits in ‘Safe & Trusting Spaces’

*The new Netflix romantic comedy “Always Be My Maybe” stars Ali Wong and Randall Park as Sasha Tran and Marcus Kim. Childhood besties who become estranged, and reconnect 15 years later when Sasha returns to San Francisco to open her latest restaurant.

Boasting a diverse cast and crew, the film also features Michelle Buteau (Broad City), Vivian Bang (White Rabbit), Karan Soni (Deadpool 2), Charlyne Yi (Paper Heart), Daniel Dae Kim (Hellboy), James Saito (While We’re Young) and a hilarious guest appearance by Keanu Reeves (John Wick) who plays a heightened version of himself.

EURweb’s Jill Munroe sat down with Buteau and Kim to talk about the film, eating in swimsuits and why Michelle believes that Ali Wong really has a big, black woman in hiding in her body.

Daniel Dae Kim steps into his first comedic role with “Always Be My Maybe.” Kim typically working on dramas or within the action genre. We talked about what that change of pace was like for him:

“I like to do it all. As actors, we like to think that we can do everything. But I haven’t had much opportunity to do many comedies. It doesn’t matter the size of the role, and what they are doing I thought it was so special. I can only do comedy when I feel safe, in a trusting environment.”

That’s when Michelle chimed in to add, “that’s how I feel about sitting and eating in a bathing suit, it’s got to be a ‘safe and trusting’ in environment.”

Michelle is also a new mommy of twins – a boy and a girl – and Ali has two young daughters, so clearly mommy talk likely dominated shooting. While Michelle said that came up, the two are good friends so they also spent time discussing food and music.

“She loves Anita Baker – speaking about Wong – there is a big black woman stuck inside Ali Wong’s body, do not get it twisted. She knows all the rap lyrics, we danced to “Dirty Dancing” and she lifted me up.”

“Always Be My Maybe” debuts in limited theatres and on Netflix, May 31.
