Award-Winning ‘Funny Married Stuff’ Offers Solutions and Laughs to Navigate Marriage

*LOS ANGELES  –  While we’ve all heard the ominous statistic that roughly 50 percent of marriages end in divorce, what many may not know is that experts estimate that the divorce rate has fallen roughly 24 percent from its peak in 1981.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, the number of divorced persons per 1,000 Americans fell from 4.7 in 1990 to 2.9 in 2016.

Despite the facts, media representation of marriages is widely negative with even the most successful black comedy shows such as Blackish showing the stars exploring divorce. Tired of seeing negative images of marriages in the media, one couple is trying to change the narrative.

Actress Lonyé Perrine and her husband of 15 years Peyton Perrine created the web series Funny Married Stuff as a way to promote positive, fun and real images of marriage by combining improv humor with a touch of marital lessons.  Now in its

second season, the show is gaining national attention winning “Best Sketch Comedy” at the Miami Web Fest, “the Award of Merit” at the Indie Fest Film Awards and “Best Web Series” at the Philadelphia Independent Film Awards. Additionally, the show was featured at the Pan African Film Festival earlier this year.

“Contrary to what is being shown in the media, healthy black marriages do exist and representation matters,“ said Lonyé, who has appeared in TV shows such as “Criminal Minds,” “Rosewood” and “Castle.”  “This show is one that people can relate to, see themselves in us, and hopefully take away a little nugget that may help them in their marriage.”

Covering topics ranging from overspending to divorce, season one of the show is a parody centered on the lives of Lonyé and Peyton, who poke fun at one another while navigating the perplexed world of marriage and parenthood. In season two, the comedy delves more deeply into the lives of their diverse group of wacky friends and extended family allowing them to explore interracial relationships, online dating and common issues faced by older couples over the age of 60.

“We understand that every marriage doesn’t look like ours so we wanted to explore what marriage looks like when you are in your 60’s or if you are in an interracial relationship, for instance. And we also wanted to explore the journey of dating and looking for the one”, said Peyton.

Funny Married Stuff will be shown at the second annual FYC Independents screenings Friday, May 31 in Van Nuys, Calif.
