*EUR correspondent Fahnia Thomas sat down with the Oscar winner and co-stars Gianni Paolo, Dante Brown, McKaley Miller and Corey Fog.
Q: What was it like working with Octavia Spencer?
GP: She taught us so much about life, the business, everything…
Q: What did she teach you?
GP: ‘It’s yo money!’ Don’t let anyone [mess] with your money. She set us all down and gave us a money talk. She said, ‘it’s yo money!’
MM: Sitting there watching her go from being herself to jumping into Ma is a lesson within itself.
DB: And communicating what she needed energy-wise…
CF: Earlier Gianni said Octavia was like a masterful captain of our ship. She came in and the energy she set for the day was held [at that level]. Having someone who can do that effectively is amazing.
Q: The kids mentioned you gave them advice about money…
OS: I was teaching them there are certain things they need on their team, ways to save and what not to do. Each of them will be the head of their own corporation so it’s not about buying the showiest cars, it’s about having a great publicist, it’s not about having the best outfit, it’s about having a good lawyer…rounding out your team and just practical things. Basically teaching them when they didn’t ask for advice!
Q: Is there a crazy relative in a basement somewhere because with Ma you tap into this sinister creepy Auntie?
OS: No, research. The character exhibits some traits that are disorders so once I did all the research and started to connect the dots it was easier to make the character well-rounded. She’s out there!
Q: At what moment did you know you made it in Hollywood?
OS: I was a PA on “A Time to Kill” and I was given a line in the movie. To me that first paycheck I earned meant I’d been validated…and to keep going because you’re the only person that can stop your momentum.
