*Will Smith and Queen Latifah are teaming to produce a contemporary musical version of Romeo and Juliet for Netflix, THR reports.

Solvan “Slick” Naim has been tapped to direct the untitled project from a script he co-wrote with Dave Broome. The film is based on William Shakespeare’s famous works and described as “a contemporary, musical take on Romeo and Juliet set against the urban rhythms of New York,” per Variety.

The publication further breaks down the plot as follows:

The love story follows a young waitress from the streets of Brooklyn and an aspiring musician from a wealthy family whose unconventional romance forces them to confront their life choices.

The streaming service announced the project on Thursday, a day before it premieres Naim’s comedy series “It’s Bruno,” which he wrote, directed and stars as the owner of a dog named Bruno in Brooklyn.

The Netflix project will reunite Latifah with Smith, who gave the singer/actress her first TV gig as a guest star on “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.”

Speaking of which…. in case you missed it, Smith recently recreated the “Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air” theme song for his new track with Logic.

He’s also set to remain on your radar for the rest of the year as he has several projects slated to drop, including “Aladdin,” “Gemini Man,” and the animated actioner “Spies in Disguise,” set for release this Christmas.

Smith previously announced that “Bad Boys for Life” is scheduled for a January 17, 2020 release.

Meanwhile, Latifah recently announced a couple of projects for Lifetime, including biopics about hip-hop icons Salt-N-Pepa and gospel queens The Clark Sisters.
