*Common is opening up about his split with soul singer Erykah Badu in a new interview with PEOPLE.

The former couple dated in the early ’00s and collaborated on a number of hit singles during their time together. But when they called it quits in 2002, the rapper took it particularly hard.

“Some of the hardest work I’ve done on myself has been after breakups,” Common told the publication. “With Erykah Badu, that was my first love where you’re just open and floating. When we split, I was 27 or 28. I was in a haze, just going through the motions. It was hard to eat. It wasn’t her fault, the relationship just didn’t go forward.”

Common says he suffered through similar heartbreak following the end of another high profile relationship years after Erykah.

“I was in another breakup after that that was heavy,” he continued. “That one honestly is what sent me to therapy.” Fortunately, the hip-hop hottie says he’s not been left jaded by his romantic fails, as he is still “open to a relationship” again.

“I know how to communicate like an adult now,” he explained. “I want to be the best partner I can be.”

As we previously reported, in his recently released memoir, “Let Love Have the Last Word,” Common reveals he was molested at 9 or 10 years old during a sleepover at his aunt’s home by a family friend he refers to as Brandon.

“[Brandon] kept saying, ‘It’s okay, it’s okay’ as he pulled down my shorts and molested me,” Common wrote in the book. “Thinking back, I should’ve gotten up from the bed and ran out of the room; but I felt a deep and sudden shame for what happened, and for what he kept trying to make happen as I had brought it all on myself.”

When he informed his mother about the incident, Common said she noted: “‘You seem like a happy person.’”

“But that’s another reason why I talked about it. Some people that seem happy are not always happy,” the Oscar winner explained.

“Let Love Have The Last Word” is on bookshelves now.
