Contemporary African-American Inventors

*Whenever we are thinking about modern Black inventors, Garrett A. Morgan is the first to come to mind. He brought us out of the dark and gifted us with the spotlight. We also think about Charles Drew who gifted the world with the much-needed blood bank.

The Black community has a legacy of inventions in the US and have brought forward some of the most extraordinary innovators of our time. History, however, always paints Black inventors as a thing of the past and excludes modern inventors from the last decade. Well, we’re here to change that and introduce you the most influential contemporary inventors and innovators of the past 2 decades.

Modern Black Inventors

1.     Marc B. Auguste Sr.

This Haitian-born inventor played an instrumental part in bringing forward the prototyping and development of the first multi-purpose and portable coin organizer. Marc had also gone on ahead to share the rights of intellectual property with his eldest son, Marc Jr., and daughter-in-law, Jacqueline.

This invention was made in order to assist the visually impaired people out there but gradually gained traction as a universally convenient mechanism for everyone.

2.     Lonnie G. Johnson

Johnson was the former Acting Chief at the Space Nuclear Power Section of the New Mexico Air Force Weapons Laboratory. He also managed to become the Senior Systems Engineer for NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. This is where he worked for the mission Galileo to Jupiter.

Even though these credentials wouldn’t help you in believing so, but this Tuskegee alumnus was popular for inventing the Super Soaker Squirt Gun. A toy designed by a NASA scientist! Just 2 years after this toy was invented, it was able to bag a massive $200 million in revenue with over 80 patents.

3.     Janet Emerson Bashen

Founder of the Bashen Corporation in 1994, Janet had very little capital to come up with anything really. In January of 2006, however, she didn’t simply find success but she also left her mark in history. This Black woman was able to become the first to hold patents for her software invention called LinkLine.

Haven’t heard of it? Well, it was a web-based application that made numerous reports, managed documents, managed claims, and tracked EEO claims. Due to this invention, Janet was able to kick start a company that focused and revolved around her innovation and build practical EEO initiatives.

Now that we’ve introduced you to a couple of modern Black inventors, you are all set to look for a few more on your own! You can go ahead and look up Dr. Patricia Bath, Thomas Mensah and Elijah Abron to start with!
