Ringside Update/Canelo vs Jacobs The Epilogue

*There’s so many thoughts that I have about this fight folks, I’m not quite sure where to begin, so why don’t I start off by saying that in spite of the fact that my guy didn’t win, it was indeed an exciting boxing weekend. And although I arrived a day before the big fight on that Friday I got there just in time to witness the spectacular weight-in at the T-Mobile Arena where it looked as if they became two inches from going toe to toe on the scales.

Maybe it’s just me but I think that Daniel Jacobs was trying to get under Canelo Alvarez‘s skin by headbutting him on the scales. Whatever the case may have been, on fight night it sure didn’t work. And don’t get me wrong folks, these two guys are real boxing gladiators who both came into this one with something in common and that is they both fought GGG and they both had there hands full with him. So we were definitely looking to see some real fireworks in the ring last Saturday night and that’s what we got.

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez showed us all why he deserves to be considered the best in the middleweight division as he displayed superb boxing skills with lateral movement throughout making Jacobs miss so many shots by getting out of the way using the ring while landing his devastating body shots and jabs to Jacobs face. And although Jacobs started off kind of slow at the opening bell, he did find his groove in the later rounds but by the end of the fight, it was a little too late to catch up. All three judges declared “Canelo” the winner and unified middleweight champion having now captured the IBF, WBA, and WBC titles.

My hat goes off to him and folks, right now I’ll leave it off until somebody beats him again because he’s for lack of a better term, “the real deal Holyfield.” As for Jacobs, I still think that the ” miracle man” is a great fighter also and I believe he’s still got a lot of fight left in him but maybe not at middleweight. At the post-fight press conference he stated that he will be moving up in weight to 168 lbs so let’s see how well he does there. He has nothing to be ashamed of, as he did very well for himself he just didn’t do enough to win. That’s the way it goes in this sport as long as you are in it, you can’t give up. And as I always say, we’ll see what happens.

As I began this piece, I mentioned that it was an exciting boxing weekend and what really made it that was the fact that the Hublot Watch Company joined forces with the WBC to put on their annual “Night Of Champions” dinner at the Encore Hotel and Resort the night before the fight to raise money for retired fighters and those who are down on their luck and boy, what a night. They had in attendance the likes of ‘Big’ George Foreman, Evander Holyfield, Mike Tyson, Roberto Duran, Lennox Lewis, and ‘Sugar” Ray Leonard (just to name a few). They were all there for one of boxing’s most worthy causes to help those fighters who cannot help themselves.

Also in attendance was the great Carlos Santana who recieved a special diamond studded WBC championship belt designed by Hublot for all that he has accomplished throughout his musical career and doing goodwill around the world.

Folks, everyone left out of there on “full” status from after having a gourmet of lobster tail, and filet migon, and everyone recieved a specially designed minature WBC championship belt in their gift bags designed by Hublot. It don’t get better than that.

In other boxing news, Tony Harrison and Jermell Charlo are set to get at it again on June 23 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. The last time these two got together it was a night of fistic fury and after twelve rounds Harrison was awarded the decision that some say was controversial. At the press conference the other day at the Conga Room, things got pretty heated as these two stood on stage together. Fortunately, they both held their composure in spite of the catcalling from each other. It should turn out to be some real fireworks in June as Charlo seeks to revenge his loss and Harrison seeks to defend his new title. As I always say, we’ll see what happens.
