Jordan Brand Celebrates Unbanned: The Legend of AJ1 Documentary Digital Release

Lionsgate and the Jordan Brand threw a launch party in Los Angeles at the Jumpman LA store for the digital release of Unbanned: The Legend of AJ1.

The rooftop basketball court was transformed into a screening area to watch the story of Michael Jordan’s first shoe with Nike, the Air Jordan 1.

The shoe became a catalyst to the blurred lines between sports, entertainment and fashion for a generation. The famous black and red colorway and later, the Jumpman silhouette, changed the business of sportswear on a global scale and marked the introduction of sneaker culture.

While multi-million dollar shoe contracts and superstar player specific shoes are the norm now, Jordan’s deal with Nike and his own shoe was a first. It also marked the first time a non-traditional colorway was introduced in the NBA. Nike faced a ban of the shoe by the NBA – then NBA commissioner David Stern is featured in the film and gives his version of events as to whether or not the shoe was officially banned – chatter that they were spending too much money on a rookie NBA player, especially a black one.

Interviews featured include Black-ish creator Kenya Barris, actor Anthony Anderson, DJ and producer DJ Khaled, Michael B. Jordan, Quincy Jones, Spike Lee, Lena Waithe, Carmelo Anthony, Michael B. Jordan, Chuck D, Russell Westbrook, former Jordan designer Tinker Hatfield and more.

Unbanned: The Legend of AJ1 will launch digitally on May 14. In the week leading up to the release, Jordan Brand has partnered with the documentary to announce the “Unbanned Unboxed” campaign, a week-long sweepstakes offering 23 rare Jumpman-related prizes.

A portion of tickets sold will benefit WINGS – the Jordan Brand’s community division – which will donate to various charities that empower youth through mentorship and education.
