*Most people saw the illustration but did not understand that Google was honoring a women rights activist and abolitionist. The woman in the illustration was Sojourner Truth.
Google kicked off Black History Month this year by honoring Sojourner Truth – the abolitionist. This had been done by creating an illustration of Truth with the help of Loveis Wise, an artist from Philadelphia.
“A Personal and Meaningful Experience…”
Wise released a statement about her illustration where she said that this experience was very personal and meaningful to her because she is a Black woman herself. Sojourner Truth’s persistence and her journey had inspired major changes for the rights of both – Black women and the African American community as a whole. Wise also said that the history of Truth was very deeply rooted among her ancestors all around the world.
Isabella Baumfree
Truth was born to slave parents and was named Isabella Baumfree. She was born in the Ulster Country of New York in 1797. She managed to escape to freedom with her daughter but had to, sadly enough, leave all of her other children behind.
Truth escaped to freedom in 1826 and soon became popular as a traveling preacher. In 1850, she even managed to publish a renowned memoir where she recounted her time as a slave. Just one year later, Truth went on to deliver her most acclaimed speech at a women’s rights conference in Ohio called “Aint I Woman”. We would highly recommend all Black women to listen or read up on her speech!
Truth Will Be Featured on the $10 Bill in 2020
Wise depicted Truth when she delivered the legendary speech in the Google doodle. It even featured the inspired Black women outside the courthouse. After introducing the world to her depiction of the courthouse, Wise said, ““Without her work and the awareness Sojourner spread, the US would not be what it currently is today! It’s important to lift up her legacy and reflect on that”.
Well, the US Treasury has a lot more planned to honor this legendary woman. On the 100th anniversary of the right to vote for women, the US Treasury had planned to feature her on the $10 bill. This bill will feature Truth along with some other suffragists. The bill is set to be released in 2020.
