As noted by 11 Alive via Atlanta Magazine, the FreakNik event was started in the mid-80s by students at the Atlanta University Center during Spring Break and quickly grew into an annual retreat for thousands of young Black folks.

Lil Kim even referenced the event on her 1996 single “Crush On You.”

The 2019 FreakNik takes place June 22 at Lakewood Amphitheatre, and over 18,000 people are expected to attend.
