*Lately, everyone is talking about the Internet of Things (IoT), but not many people actually know what the term refers to. As a matter of fact, statistics have shown that 87% of people don’t have the slightest idea what the phrase ‘The Internet of Things’ means.

In the broadest sense, the term Internet of Things refers to an environment where everything is connected to the internet. That includes devices (vehicles, computers, smartphones, and almost everything with a sensor) and applications (anything from an e-commerce platform to a social media app like Twitter). As the name suggests, the Internet is the backbone of the whole concept because objects need a network through which they’ll talk to each other — basically, you need data and a means to access it. However, despite the fact that they are inextricably linked, the Internet of Things and the physical web are two completely separate things.

Although there is no denying that the IoT is a path-breaking discovery that will significantly improve the quality of our lives, it will face many challenges before it’s utilized to its full potential. To help you understand the issues that need to be tackled well in order for successful IoT implementation, the SafeAtLast team put together the infographic below, showing incredible statistics about the latest tech buzzword.

Data Collection

The vision of the IoT is to enable small devices to generate consistent data. However, this also means that IoT solutions will be generating data at a very high rate, which would require a huge amount of storage space.  According to the source, in 2019, one-third of all completed IoT projects will be abandoned before putting into operation due to the lack of data management system that can analyse and process that amount of data.

Data Security Issues

With the IoT world on the rise, there will be an increased focus for malware attacks in enterprises. In fact, 35% of the leaders in the IT industry have stated that security issues are the main obstacle to IoT success.  Security issues for IoT solutions pose the biggest challenge for its implementation as the breaches could impact both individuals and enterprises vulnerable to financial and operational damage. Namely, 84% of the organizations that have already incorporated the IoT system have already experienced an IoT-related security breach. For those reasons, a substantial amount of money will be invested in IoT security solutions in 2020, $840 million to be precise.

Lack of Oversight

In 2015, a federal appeals court ruled that the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) can sue companies that employ poor IT security practices. However, there is still no regulatory or governmental oversight of how IoT solutions should be designed or manufactured, which puts consumers in a dangerous situation. There aren’t any requirements for companies to manufacture their devices to meet a certain security standard. Also, there no transparency laws or regulations that force companies to disclose exactly how they acquire or use data.

Governmental authority won’t necessarily solve all IoT privacy issues, but a complete lack of third-party supervision is a weakness that only adds to the other weakness already associated with IoT.
