UglyDolls’ all-star cast talso includes the acting and singing voices of Kelly Clarkson, Nick Jonas, Blake Shelton and Pitbull.
The story encourages everyone to let their freak flags fly in celebration of life and all its possibilities.
EURweb’s Jill Munroe sat down with Monáe to talk her role as Mandy – a resident of “Perfection” – a town that send its dolls to the Perfection Institute, where they are trained to become flawless, before graduating to the “real” world to find their perfect child match. Mandy is hiding a secret that makes her less than perfect, and through the course of the film, learns to love herself and become a leader.
Monáe says she can relate to Mandy, because she considers herself a “protector of weirdos”
“I’m super-excited to embody Mandy. She’s like me in so many ways. I feel like I’m a protector at heart. She protects the outcasts, the weirdos, this is a celebration of being weird and embracing the things that make you unique, even if it makes others uncomfortable.”
We also discussed Monáe’s co-star, Lizzo – the body positive, on-the-rise singer/rapper who joined her onstage at Coachella recently – Could there be a future collaboration in the works for the future? Monáe says she would love for the two to come together musically.
“I would love that, I’m such a fan. I was at her show, just screaming and supporting her. I would be honored.”

On the other side of the mountain, in the town of Uglyville, weird is celebrated and strange is special. This is where we meet the free-spirited Moxy and her UglyDoll friends. Moxy lives in hope that, today will be the day she is united with a child to love her forever. A curious doll, one day Moxy (Kelly Clarkson) gathers a group of her closest friends and sets off to find what’s on the other side.
In Perfection, Moxy and her crew are put through their paces by the cruel perfect doll responsible for training the recruits, Lou (Nick Jonas.) The journey to self discovery and unconditional self love, is a great message for kids and adults.
The film also stars Wanda Sykes, Emma Roberts, Gabriel Iglesias, Wang Leehom, Bebe Rexha, Charli XCX and Lizzo.
STXfilms will release UGLYDOLLS in theaters on May 3,2019
