EURweb’s Jill Munroe spoke with Waithe, Mitchell and Dabu about why the series has struck such a cord with viewers and what to expect with season 2.
Mitchell discussed taking on roles that are different from his breakout performance as Eric “Eazy-E” Wright in the NWA biopic, “Straight Out of Compton.”

“I just try to stay true to myself but also show a different face of Jason Mitchell every time. For so long in my career, people would say, ‘hey look at Eazy-E playing Ronsel’ so I just wanted people to see me as Jason and not the iconic role I got to play at the beginning of my career. People are finally starting to see it and I love it.”
When Waithe was asked what is it about her stories that seems to connect with audiences, she responded that she would like to ask the audience the same thing.
“I’m just trying to stay true to myself, to entertain myself. I’m trying to make sure that I feel something when I go back and look at it or reread it. I’m my own litmus test. Sometimes I’m right, sometimes I’m not. I just try to have an ongoing with the audience…”
“The Chi” is a coming-of-age drama series centered on a group of residents on Chicago’s south side who become linked by coincidence but bonded by the need for connection and redemption.
