Animals have such a precious place in our lives. They love us unconditionally and aren’t bothered with the complexities we human beings so actively make a big deal out of. They’re quite content to take naps, eat food, go on walks, and receive all the pets they can.

Of course, because mortality is the literal worst, animals don’t live forever. That really bums us out, but the memory of favorite pets and animals we’ve built relationships with go on to endure in fond memories for the rest of our lives. Sometimes we like to remember our pets by humanizing them a little, imagining what they might’ve said to us if they could use words we understand.

Some animal-human relationships are complicated. Alpaca breeders know that they’ll get 30% to 35% more fleece weight by shearing the animals annually rather than biennially. That wouldn’t have been hard to figure out if Alpacas could talk. Another complicated relationship that’s seen strain over time is between dogs and mail delivery people. The stereotypes are prevalent and lots of dogs don’t even need words to express their distrust of our brave ladies and gentlemen of the USPS. But, one dog loved her mailman and he loved her back. Then she passed away.

When he came to the door to deliver the mail, he was informed that the dog — Gretchen — had died. Rather than the sadness that’s usually coupled with the loss of a pet, Gretchen’s family handed their mailman a bag of treats with a note:

“Gretchen passed away yesterday. She asked me to ask you if you would share her treats that she never got to finish with the other dogs on your route. She always enjoyed seeing you come to the door and was always happy to get a snack from you. Thank you, The Cimino Family.”

He sent a picture of the note to his daughter, who posted it on Twitter, causing it to go viral and gather tons of views, likes, retweets, and tears.

“I’m not crying, you’re crying,” one user wrote.

These sentiments were reflected widely across the internet. The top two benefits of social media marketing are increased traffic and exposure and that one post showed Gretchen to the world. Now hundreds of thousands of people know Gretchen’s name and are celebrating her beautiful existence summed up in a sweet note that proved she truly was the goodest girl.
