EUR Film: There Might be a Sequel to ‘The Curse of La Llorona’ – Exclusive/Watch

*More than just a folk tale, “The Curse of La Llorona” has finally been made into a movie after centuries of folklore about the weeping woman. The world premiere was held in Austin Texas during SXSW and the press junket was the next day.

EURweb correspondent Kiki Ayers was on the scene to talk to castmates Linda Cardellini, Patricia Velásquez, Raymond Cruz and Director Michael Chavez.

There are many different stories of the infamous La Llorona, but the movie was spot on to the story that the castmates grew up hearing from their grandparents and great grandparents. For those who aren’t familiar, the story of Llorona is huge in the Spanish culture. Every country has a slightly different version of the weeping woman who comes after other people’s children after drowning her own in the river when her husband cheated on her with a younger woman. Kids that grow up hearing about her often fear her. They’re told they better be on their best behavior otherwise La Llorona will get them.

Director Chavez explained that there was extensive research that went into creating the film but they didn’t want to do too much to take away from the story. He explained that he thinks they landed on the best and scariest version of La Llorona. “[The story] doesn’t differ at all.”

“Going into it you always want to make it the infinitive version, the ultimate version,” Chavez explained. “What happens is every country has their version of La Llorona but what happens is you claim it. There’s no ancient La Llorona in the textbook. We can’t go to the source because it’s just been a story.”

We definitely don’t want to give away any spoilers but the way the film’s ending did leave an opening as to whether or not La Llorona will make a return which means there could be a sequel … based on how this first one does according to Chavez.

“If audiences want it then I think La Llorona can make a return.”
