“Breakthrough“ tells the true life and incredible, as well as inspiring story of a young teenage boy John Smith, who recovers from a very tragic accident. Our correspondent, LMarie, sat down with Chrissy Metz to talk about her role as Joyce Smith, John Smith’s mother.
Being that she is currently starring in the most emotional show on television, we were curious as to what drew Chrissy to yet another very emotional role. She shares with us the medical emergency she experienced with her own mother who suffered a stroke and doctors didn’t believe she would recover.
“Almost verbatim did I say the same words to my mother’s doctors as Joyce said to John’s doctors. And of course, everything just aligned,” said Chrissy.

Actors often try to take roles to break away from their TV characters, but with such a connection to this story it seems as if Chrissy was meant to play the role.
In the film she plays a woman who is very religious and has a strong belief in God’s power. A belief so strong she refused to give up on her son and prayed that God would bring him back, even when doctors told her there was no hope. This movie is not only about the power of God but also the power and strength of a mother’s love.
“Breakthrough” covers all of the emotions that one can go through when enduring an experience like this. For instance, people often question the whys of God.
“I think what’s so great about the movie is they’re not afraid to ask the question of why me, why now? It’s so wonderful it’s not perfectly tied in a sweet little bow,” Chrissy said.
“Breakthrough” shows the ups and downs a family can encounter during this journey. The film hits theaters Easter weekend so grab the family and the tissues and prepare to be inspired.
