Kim Kardashian Makes Plea to Nashville Landlords After Felon Matthew Charles Denied Housing Again

Matthew Charles

*Kim Kardashian has spoken out about the challenges she is having securing residency for a former inmate. It would appear that not even her clout can help a brotha out.

As we previously reported, Matthew Charles was granted clemency in January but denied housing due to his background. After serving 20 years of his 35-year sentence on non-violent drug charges, he was release from prison following the implementation of the First Step act.

However, like many former inmates, Charles has found it quite difficult to find housing. He reportedly applied to rent an apartment in Nashville, Tennessee, but was rejected. When Kim offered to pay his rent in advance (five years to be exact), he was rejected again. So she hit up social media to make a plea to any compassionate property managers in the area.

“Matthew Charles’s lease application was rejected again bc of his criminal record (even w me paying his rent in advance). If there are any landlords w a 2 bedroom in Nashville willing to give Mr Charles a 2nd chance, contact [email protected] Serious inquiries only, thank you,” she wrote on Twitter

Charles was one of the first prisoners released under the First Step Act. The new law “reformed sentencing laws that have wrongly and disproportionately harmed the African-American community,” Donald Trump said during his State of the Union address, where Charles was a guest.

Earlier this month, he hit up Facebook to detail his struggles with finding a place to call home.

“The violence on my wrap sheet occurred back in 1988, when I was completely young, dumb, and wrong. … It’s 31 years ago,” Charles said on Facebook. “This is about obstacles to successful re-entry and reintegration back into society for ex-felons, that I and many released felons face on regular basis that need addressing and remedied.”

“If having a place to live and a job to work are essential for every citizen,” he added. “Why would that not be the essential case for every citizens, regardless of being a past convicted felon?”

When Charles heard about Kardashian’s offer, he expressed his gratitude on social media.

“Kim did not do this for attention or publicity,” he said. “I had to share it, because it’s (too) good not to, and my heart is about to burst with happiness, that I wish you to rejoice in this news with me.”

But Kardashian is disappointed that even after her offer to pay his rent five years in advance, Charles’ rental applications are still being rejected because “of his criminal record.”
