*A top leader of New York’s notorious Gambino crime family was fatally shot Wednesday on Staten Island.
Francesco “Franky Boy” Cali was reportedly shot multiple times in the torso outside of his home, according to the New York Police Department.
He was transported to the Staten Island University North Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Cali was 53.
At this time, no arrests have been made and his death is under investigation.
Witnesses told New York Daily News “there were like six shots, and then there were three more.”
“The man was on the ground face-up. His head was by his SUV, and the truck was open,” the witness told the outlet.

Cali is the nephew-in-law of Sicilian mobster John Gambino and had close ties to the Sicilian Mafia family led by Salvatore Inzerillo. In 2012, Cali was identified as the new underboss of the Gambino crime family.
In 2015, Cali was named boss, replacing 68-year-old Domenico Cefalu, who was forced to step down due to old age, New York Daily News and USA Today reported.
The appointment allowed Cali to join the ranks of former leaders like John Gotti and Carlo Gambino. Gotti died while in prison in 2002 of throat cancer and Gambino died in 1976.
During his reign, Cali ran the heroin and Oxycontin trade, according to The New York Post.
He was the highest-ranking mob figure to be murdered in New York City since 1985, when Paul Castellano was assassinated outside Sparks Steakhouse in Manhattan, according to WPIX-TV.
