‘The Apollo’ Opens 18th Annual Tribeca Filmestival

The legendary landmark featured in the HBO TFF opening film “The Apollo.”

*The 18th Annual Tribeca Film Festival/TFF (April 24-May 5) will open with the World Premiere of the HBO documentary film “The Apollo,” directed by Roger Ross Williams.

“The Apollo” celebrates the historic New York City cultural landmark, while exploring the current struggle of black lives in America, the role that art plays in that struggle, and the broad range of African American achievement.

‘The Apollo’ was the launchpad for Billie Holiday, Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Stevie Wonder, The Jackson 5, Luther Vandross, Dave Chappelle, Lauryn Hill, and Jimi Hendrix, just to name a few.

The feature program this year consists of 103 films from 124 filmmakers. “Our goal each year is to strike a balance between discovering new talent and showcasing new projects by notable filmmakers and storytellers,” says Executive Vice President, Paula Weinstein. The following are just the tip of the iceberg. “Burning Cane,” directed and written by Phillip Youmans, is set among the cane fields of rural Louisiana. “Burning Cane follows a deeply religious mother struggling to reconcile her convictions of faith with the love she has for her troubled son. With Wendell Pierce, Karen Kaia Livers, Dominique McClellan, and Braelyn Kelly.

What’s My Name – Muhammad Ali,” directed by Antoine Fuqua, and written by Steven Leckart, is Ali’s journey from world champion boxer to inspiring social activist. In this (USA) World Premiere, the story is told through Ali’s own voice, with never-before-seen archival material. The HBO Sports release executive producers are LeBron James and Maverick Carter.

Wendell Pierce in “Burning Cane.”

“Gully,” directed by Nabil Elderkin, explores the traumatic childhoods and socioeconomic hardships of three disillusioned teens that reach their breaking points and go on a rampage through a dystopian modern day Los Angeles. With Terrence Howard, Amber Heard, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Charlie Plummer, Jacob Latimore, Jonathan Majors, John Corbett, and Robin Givens

The Remix: Hip Hop X Fashion,” directed by Lisa Cortés and Farah X has its (USA) World Premier  at the TFF. The Feature Documentary is the story of how hip hop changed fashion, leading to the stratospheric and global rise of street wear. It is a journey of African American creativity and the limitless possibilities of a cultural movement on a global scale. With Misa Hylton, April Walker, Dapper Dan, and Kerby Jean-Raymond. 

Devil’s Pie – D’Angelo,” directed and written by Carine Bijlsma, explores the life of D’Angelo. When on the precipice of super-stardom, D’Angelo disappeared entirely from the public’s eye in 2000. Now preparing a comeback tour, Bijlsma’s film finds D’Angelo at a crossroads between a haunted past and an uncertain future.
