*The “Star Trek” monologue that begins with “Space, the final frontier” was so familiar and popular back in the 60s, NASA used the phrase for “Project Apollo: Where No Man Has Gone Before.”

You don’t have to be a space cadet, such as myself, to be fascinated with science and space travel captured onscreen in “Apollo 11.”

What is so spellbinding is that it’s not science fiction. This is the real deal.  Audiences will be captivated and enthralled getting a birds’ eye view as they watch Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins prepare to enter outer space before setting foot on the moon.

It should be noted that the pivotal moment in space exploration began with John Glenn. He was the first American astronaut to orbit the earth in 1962. Glenn relied on black analyst and mathematician  Katherine Johnson. Her calculations got him launched and returned.

Johnson, now 100 years old, was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015 for her pioneering role in the space program starting in the 1950s. Her story is chronicled in the extraordinary film, “Hidden Figures,” starring Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monae, Mahershela Ali, and Kevin Costner.

Director/Editor Todd Douglas Miller went to great lengths obtaining over a hundred hours of footage from National Archives to tell the trio’s story on film that began several hours before the launch and ended eight days later. And yes, there are blacks in the crowd and at the launch center at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.
